Logo Designs.

One of the first workshops we had was to create logos out of our first initials, i found this fairly hard, because i found that the letters 'S' and 'W' hard to fit together. These are the logos that i did in the workshop, it was hard to create these as the letters didn't fit together very well however I think these outcomes have worked out well.

The one I feel has worked the best is the first one (white with black outline) as the 'S' looks as though it is falling off the 'W'

More paper folding...

Whilst attempting to make some nets, I used some scraps of paper to make other interesting shapes and sculpture, this where fairly simple to make but not very sturdy. Here are a few examples of the paper structures i have made. Even though they are simple structures and easy to make and heave been made out of left over paper, they are effective and shapes that can be come quite useful for adding designs to future packaging.

Logos and Branding (The Coca-Cola Bottle)

I decided it was about time I looked into how well known famous companies and institutions used logos and branding to further themselves, I find it extremely interesting how big companies such as McDonald's, Coca-cola, pepsi, walkers, and nike have branded them selves well enough that they can be identified subconsciously.

One fact i find extremely interesting is that of a coca cola bottle, as you can see in the image below throughout time the bottle of coca cola has hardly changed since 1915, meaning that even when the name is taken off the bottle it can still be strongly identified and the product still known.

Paper Folding (Richard Sweeney)...

So I thought it was about time I looked at ways in which other people have used paper as a design and art material, so naturally being a person who relies heavily on the internet (which I need to break the habit of) went to google, I came across a designer who's name id heard before, in relation to paper folding. Richard Sweeney.

Sweeney's works with paper and card and manages to cleverly manipulate the material into shapes and sculptures which are showcased all over the world. His work fascinates me as he manages to turn a soft and delicate paper forms into strong interesting structures.

Packaging Ideas...

Our newest brief is partly designed around packaging, so i need to think of ways that i can make this more interesting, and stand out from other standard packaging ideas. We have been asked to design out packaging around ourselves as designer, which for me is quite hard as i'm still experimenting with different aspects of design.

One way in which I thought about experimenting with packaging is to deign the packaging around the type, instead of designing the type around that packaging. For example I could make the packaging in the shape of a letter 'S' instead of making the packaging bit enough to incorporate the letter 'S'.

Workshop 01

Our first workshop was a sort of introduction into paper, sounds silly but it was a way of getting us used to the was paper can fold and the shapes that can be made by scoring and folding. It was interesting to see the shapes that could be made out of paper which i didn't think was as easy to make as they actually were.

One of the first shapes we made, was when we folded paper into a 'YoYo'/ Spinning top shape, it was a lot simpler that in looks, firstly we have to cut out a circle and the cut a line from the edge of the circle to the middle, this enabled the paper to be folded into a sort of cone shape, then the next shape was done in a similar way but the centre of the circle had another fold in the centre which created a cone inside the cone, which the first could slot into, below are the two shape before made tighter and put together.

New Brief...

Project Brief - Design a package that reflects your unique skills and interests as a graphic designer.

So, the newest brief we have been set is quite broad. We have to make a logo and piece of packaging inspired by ourselves and the designers we are. I always find it so difficult to do things inspired by myself, you would think is would be easy as no-one knows you better than yourself, right? Yet i always seem to get a mental and creative block as soon as the word 'Identity' is mentioned.
